Science Club

Goal: To do some fun science projects that are not part of our curriculum. To prepare for Science Olympiad competition.

We have about 25 members. Those that are in sports meet at lunch 1 day a week in preparation for competetion. This year's major project was rocketry. Next year we will do geology in the fall and some disections in the spring.

Student Council

The Randolph Middle School Student Council consists of a teacher sponsor and nine student members (three eighth graders and two students from the fifth, sixth and seventh grade). The Student Council meets once a month to plan specific school social events and to discuss ideas for school improvement (brought to them by fellow students or teachers). Major projects include two school dances, holiday parties, end-of-school festivities, and maintaining the outdoor classroom.

Reading Counts

Reading Counts is a computerized reading program that motivates students to increase their reading practice by reading more and better books. If you would like to know more about this program check out their web site at Scholastic. Reading Counts replaces Accelerated Reader, our previous reading incentive program.

Some of the Accelerated Reader activities were:

Pizza Party/Dance: Students who read their goal amount of points were invited for a night of pizza and dancing. Throughout the evening, prizes were given away from businesses who donated assorted prizes.

Kansas State Women's Basketball Game: Again, students were motivated to read their point levels were invited to attend a college basketball game and eat at Burger King who donated a small drink with their meal to the students. Tickets were donated by the University.

Kansas State Student-Athlete Luncheon: Students signed a reading contract at the beginning of the nine week period to read the contracted books and score a 80% or higher on those tests. If they fullfilled the contract, students had lunch and visited with Kansas State University Student/Athletes that came represented many of the sports teams they played for. Students enjoyed asking questions and finding more about how important it is to stay focused with school and reading. They were also awarded with an ice cream sundae that they got to top with a variety of toppings.

Swimming Party: Students filled out another contract for the nine week period to achieve their goals. They were invited to attend a swimming party in Manhattan at the Kansas State Natatorium. After swimming hard, students ate at Burger King, who again is a supporter of the program which provided coupons and free drinks.

Students were given a end of the year goal to achieve 10,000 points. If they achieved their goal the whole student body will have a picnic at Tuttle Creek Lake.

The majority of the student body has participated in this program. Students can earn their way into point clubs, 50, 100, 150, and 200 points throughout the year. They are awarded at the end of the year with a certicificate. Also, the Top Reader of the Year who has accumulated the most points throughout the year is awarded with a grand prize.
