Learning about Liberia

On Thursday, April 22, Blue Valley Middle School 7th graders had the good fortune to welcome Dr. Charlotte Shoup Olsen into the classroom for a presentation. Dr. Olsen is an instructor at Kansas State University in the College of Human Ecology.

Several years ago Dr. Olsen spent two years in Liberia with the Peace Corps. She told the class about her time there and showed a slide presentation. She also brought along many things that she collected while in Liberia, including wooden games, drums and other musical instruments.

Each student was able to dress in an article of clothing and some in head dressings from Liberia. The class listened to African music and danced around the room in costume with the instruments. They had a wonderful time and learned a lot.
