This week, after learning that gamma radiation was the most energetic of their sources, Chemistry students designed an experiment to determine how distance from the source of radiation affected how the radiation counter would detect it.

Who would have thought that we could be in the field on December 10? Earth Science collected fossils at a road cut near Olsburg so they could better understand how a fossil survey helps scientists interpret ancient habitats. They first sketched the part of the road cut on which they were collecting. That was followed by a survey where students started at the bottom of the cut and worked their way to the top of the cut. Students will spend the next few days cleaning and identifying those fossils before they leave for Winter Break.

On December 6, Blue Valley Scholars Bowl competed at the Centralia Junior Varsity meet. They won four of their seven rounds, but did not break into finals. Our next meet is December 13 at Onaga.

Chemistry is currently building a mathematical model to explain the relative absorption of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation by matter. Using radiation counters , they are measuring the absorption of each type of radiation emitted from different radiation sources. They are also looking at the effects of shielding using paper, aluminum, and lead.

College Biology Class was excited for the opportunity to work with McCormick Elementary School students and their handwashing project. They learned so much from the collaboration. It helped not only with their mastery of microbiology protocols, but also with the enhancement of their abilities to interpret data and think critically. Letters were written to each of the elementary school student pairs explaining the bacteria found in their samples and the importance of disinfecting and handwashing.
