EXCERPTS of USD #384 Regular Board of Education Meeting
A Regular Board of Education meeting for USD #384 Blue Valley was held on June 14, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room. Members present were Mitch Innes, Reo Shultz, Stephen Corkill, Tim Innes, Jason Hartman, Ginger Blaske, and Amy Cassel. Administration present was John Cox, Superintendent, Marion Mazouch, Middle School/High School Principal, and Melody Pfaff, Board Clerk.
CALL TO ORDER: President, Mitch Innes called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
APPROVE THE AGENDA: The Board approved the agenda.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Board and guests recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
WELCOME GUESTS: President, Mitch Innes welcomed our guests.
OPEN FORUM: Anthony Meals, Katie Jones, and Becky Brenner voiced their concerns regarding the lack of communication from district administration. They expressed their support of Marion Mazouch and his many years of dedication to the district. Susan Schanks, assistant Trap Team coach, was in attendance to recognize the four students who are members of the Trap Team. The team members are Dakota Krause, Logan Schanks, A.J. Cassel, and Chance Penner. They placed fourth in their conference with Logan Schanks placing second overall. The state match will be held in Wichita. These kids have done remarkable well with only four members.
POSITIVE BOARD COMMENTS:
1. Great accomplishment for the Trap Team!
2. Congratulations to Jeremiah Duncan, Landry Zoeller, and Breeanna Young for their success at state track.
3. Thank you to the staff for taking time to show their passion for Blue Valley by speaking to the board about concerns and showing support for Marion Mazouch.
4. The Blue Valley Ball Association has had a very successful season. Great to see the coaches working with the young students.
5. Thank you to Blake Fronce and Matt Schreiber for overseeing the summer weight program.
RECOGNITION OF STUDENTS/STAFF: The FFA Chapter submitted the National Chapter Application recognizing their efforts as an entire agriculture education program. They are a finalist for the Triple Crown Award which is the highest award for an FFA Chapter in the state.
SPECIAL REPORTS: James Genandt, Sarah Philips, and Nathan Roberts from MATC were in attendance to announce the partnership with the Blue Valley Agriculture Education Department. The facilities at Blue Valley offer a tremendous welding space for this partnership to be successful at no cost to our students. Students will be able to graduate from Blue Valley with an associate degree due to this partnership. This will allow for more opportunities to expand into further collaborations with MATC. Fabulous opportunity for Blue Valley students.
PRINCIPAL REPORTS: These were noted. John Cox mentioned that the water fountains have been at installed at McCormick Elementary. Marion Mazouch congratulated the following students for their success at state track:
Jeremiah Duncan – 2nd place -100 meter dash; 2nd place 200 meter dash
Breeanna Young – 4th Place Long Jump
Landry Zoeller – 6th Place Long Jump
a. Drainage issue at McCormick Elementary: Blades and Spades is waiting for pipe to be delivered to begin work.
b. End of Year Staff Celebration: An end of year staff celebration was held at The Brick’s. The event was well attended and a great way to end a tough year in education.
c. Strategic Plans: Relating expenditures to ESSER Funds.
d. School Opening Plans: Plan is to open the 2021-2022 school year just as we ended the 2020-2021 school year.
e. Curriculum Adoption: The DLT will begin looking at curriculum for Spanish and Health/PE.
f. Student/Staff Relationship Survey: This survey will be sent out by October 1.

Splitting the Superintendent/Principal Evaluation: The Board approved the Superintendent/Principal Evaluation as presented.
Bus Tracker Community Survey: The board directed Joh Cox to send out a bus tracker community survey.
Handbooks: The Board approved the creation of a district-wide handbook approved the preschool handbook as presented.
Approve Warrants/Transfers: The Board approved the warrants/transfers as presented.
The board took at five-minute break at 8:04 p.m. Meeting reconvened at 8:09 p.m.
Executive Session for Negotiations: The Board held executive session with John Cox and Melody Pfaff to discuss negotiations. The purpose of the executive session is to protect the district’s right to the confidentiality of its negotiation position and the public interest
Meeting reconvened at 8:20 p.m. and it was noted that no action was taken during the executive session.
The Board ratified the 2021-2022 Negotiated Agreement.
Executive Session for Personnel: The Board held an executive session with John Cox and Melody Pfaff to discuss personnel. The purpose of the executive session is to protect the privacy interests of an identifiable individual.
No action taken during the executive session.
Blue Valley Mission Statement: The board directed John Cox to send out an email to the staff listing two choices for a District Mission Statement.
Key Card Access: The Board discussed the wording of the fitness center rules. It was determined that the wording of the rules needs to match the wording of the contract. Members can purchase an additional card for a spouse at a cost of $10. This will be consistent with the contract that members are currently signing.
Window Quote: The board directed John Cox to move forward with the replacement of five windows at McCormick Elementary School. The amount to replace the windows falls within the realm of the Superintendent spending limit. The windows currently in place will not open and due to the need to air the rooms out the staff is asking to replace one window in five rooms to enable them to open. SPARKS money can be used to help fund this project.
Roof at Blue Valley High School Old Gym: The Board accepted the quote from ADS Roofing to replace/repair the roof on the high school old gym in the amount of $46,356.48.
Board of Education Retreat: The board retreat will be July 30, 2021. This item will be discussed further at the July 12, 2021 board meeting.
